For many, the difference between an orthosis and a prosthesis is difficult to grasp. Yet this difference is all that is obvious. In fact, the prosthesis is a device or device designed to replace a limb, part of an amputated limb, or a severely damaged or destroyed organ.
The orthosis, meanwhile, is used to support, immobilize or make more functional a member, which is why we find functional orthoses, discharge, prophylactic, support, control, correction, etc.
A medical prescription is not necessary to visit one of our laboratories. Orthotics, prostheses and other so-called contracted products must be the subject of a medical prescription to be paid by the RAMQ. All of our foot orthotics are manufactured under medical prescription, according to the laws that govern the profession of orthotist. Other products do not have to be prescribed and can be purchased at any time. It is important to specify that private insurance companies generally require a medical prescription for the majority of the products and services they provide in the field of prosthetic- orthoses and medical equipment. In some cases, the prescription may tax certain products (see our sales policies).
To be paid by the RAMQ, orthotics, prostheses and other so-called contracted products must be prescribed by physicians specialized in orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, rheumatology, neurology, neurosurgery and geriatrics. In the case of products that are not reimbursed by the RAMQ but can be reimbursed by an insurance company, the prescription may have been written by a general practitioner or a physician of another specialty (the insured will have to check with his insurance company). Notwithstanding the foregoing information, Médicus, like any conscientious laboratory, has a duty to fulfill any order that has been produced for the good of the patient, whether or not it entitles the patient to a refund, but informing the patient of the non-refundable nature of the order.

However, an orthosis supplied to an insured person under the age of 19 remains an insured orthosis even if the duration of his daily wear is not specified.
The RAMQ provides a device whose manufacture takes into account the physical deficiency and, if applicable, the deformity to which it is called upon to supply and, where appropriate, the activities and living environment of the insured person to whom it is provided. The insured person must wear the orthosis to correct a deformity for the minimum prescribed period. Only one device provided per specific function of a member and only one per specific function of a member segment is provided.
