Wheelchairs

A manual wheelchair is propelled by arm strength or pushed by a companion, while an electric wheelchair moves with a motor controlled by a joystick. A manual chair is lighter and easy to transport; an electric chair requires less effort and is suited to longer distances or reduced strength. Médicus offers both, including folding and ultralight models.

The choice depends on your independence, your strength, how often you use it and where you go. Consider the type (manual, electric, transport), the weight and whether it folds for car transport, as well as comfort: armrests, footrests and foam cushions. The seat width must suit your body type. A Médicus advisor reviews these criteria with you and invites you to try the models in store.

A transport chair is a lighter version with small wheels, designed to be pushed by a companion rather than self-propelled. It is ideal for outings, appointments or travel, since it is compact and easy to fold. A standard wheelchair, with large rear wheels, allows the user to propel themselves. The right choice depends on your level of independence.

Depending on your condition and the applicable program, a wheelchair may qualify for public financial assistance, for example for people eligible for a program covering devices that compensate for a physical impairment. Terms and eligibility vary from case to case; confirm them with the organization concerned. The Médicus team can inform you about purchase options and help you with the process.

No prescription is needed to consult a professional in store, but depending on the product or a reimbursement, a medical prescription may be required. No appointment is needed: you can simply visit a store to try the wheelchairs, adjust the seat and choose the accessories that suit your comfort.
