Snoring

What is snoring?

Snoring corresponds to the noise produced by a sleeper through his or her breathing.

Where does it come from?

The sounds emitted by snoring come from vibrations of the soft tissues of the throat, which are relaxed during sleep: the soft palate, the base of the tongue and the pharyngeal walls. This is a very widespread phenomenon and although it is often trivialized, it has considerable importance because it generally masks another health problem.

  • Obesity;
  • Alcohol consumption and smoking;
  • Taking certain medications;
  • Sleep apnea syndrome;
  • Fatigue;
  • Sleeping while lying on the back;
  • Throat narrowing (overweight, thick tongue, short neck, nasal obstruction, receding lower jaw, etc.).

Treatment solutions for snoring

  1. Change your hygiene and diet habits

Although these measures are not completely effective, they nonetheless can help reduce snoring. Weight loss through a healthy and balanced diet and frequent physical activity, as well as considerably reducing and even stopping alcohol consumption and smoking, are good ways of positively affecting both your sleep and your overall health.

  1. Use a CPAP device

When snoring is diagnosed, it may be due to sleep apnea syndrome. The best treatment to date is to use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device. The airway pressure created by the device keeps the upper airway open during every stage of the sleep cycle, in order to control snoring and eliminate apnea.
