Physical activity, your partner in well-being

Stay active with exercise

To maintain good function during and after decongestion therapy, it’s advisable to stay active and mobile. If you are starting or resuming physical activity, here are a few tips to follow:

1.Consult your doctor or therapist: Before starting or resuming an exercise program, make sure you have their approval.

2. Listen to your body: Although studies show that exercise is beneficial, each individual is unique. Take breaks if you need to, and rest if you feel tired.

3. Monitor progress: Measure your affected limb at least once a month, or before undertaking any new physical activity.

4. Wear a compression garment: It is advisable to wear a compression garment during and after exercise, as recommended by research.

5. Move forward gradually: Whether you’re starting or resuming training, start slowly at your own pace, watching for any increase in swelling.

6. The benefits of sport: swimming, water exercise, walking, light cycling, dancing, light aerobics, gentle yoga, tai chi, qi gong and any physical activity suited to your condition are beneficial to your overall health, and particularly to the management of your lymphedema.
