What is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?
ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative muscle disease. It is characterized by progressive degeneration and paralysis of the skeletal musculature of the entire body.
Where does it come from?
The origin of ALS is unknown. It appears in both men and women and is most prevalent above age 40.
The disease results in the successive death of the nerve cells.
How can it be recognized?
The more the number of damaged nerve cells increases, the more voluntary muscle control diminishes. Over time, the disease leads to motor losses and paralysis, until it attacks speech and vital functions such as breathing and swallowing.
